  Lyretail Hogfish
Bodianus anthioides

Description: Among the more beautiful and peaceful members of the Hogfish family, the Lyretail Hogfish is a hardy fish with unique coloration. Scientifically identified as Bodianus anthioides, this fish undergoes little transformation of color from juvenile to adulthood. Like other Hogfish, the juveniles may clean parasites from other fish. It is not recommended for the reef aquarium, as larger specimens may feed on smaller invertebrates and may damage clam mantles. It has been known to employ a trick of some other fish such as some Triggers where it will blow water at the substrate. This removes a layer of sand and uncovers a potential meal. The Lyretail Hogfish has a golden snout and mainly a white body. Maroon spots occur on the body and the long swept tail is outlined with two striking maroon bars. The Lyretail Hogfish may grow to eight inches in the wild, typically a little smaller in the home aquarium.
Recommended Tank size: A 70 gallon or larger aquarium with hiding places should be provided.
Food and diet: The diet varies with maturity. As a juvenile, the Lyretail Hogfish will eat parasites off its tank mates. With maturity, however, it likes meaty foods such as snails, worms, mussels, and small fish. It will even blow water over the sand to uncover food.
Reef Compatability: Smaller individuals usually do not cause many problems in the reef aquarium, but as they grow they are a potential threat to very small shrimps, etc, but it is otherwise reef safe.
Level of Care: Easy

Please note: Aquatic Connection will not guarantee the coloration of corals as seen in your reef system.

Reason? Not all corals from our tanks and lighting will look the same when they are in your tanks. Everybody's tanks have different lighting setups, spectrums, combinations, etc. Aquatic Connection's tanks are lit by 400 watt 20K Halide bulbs. We use this combination for best growth. But for best viewing this is not the best lighting choice. Aquatic Connection photographs all polyps under Actinic only lighting. This brings out the true zoanthilia and protopalythoa colors. If your tank consists of all daylight (10K's, 14K's etc.) with minimal actinic lighting, your not going to see the vibrant true colors. We suggest you add true actinic lamps also and turn these on in the evening without the daylight lighting for proper color viewing.
