Mushroom Corals

Description: Mushroom corals, also called Corallimorphs or mushroom anemones, are very hardy corals, and one of the best for the beginner reef aquarium. Among one of the best beginner corals, they can even be maintained in aquariums with just sand substrate, live rock, and an airstone for water movement and oxygenation. This is because they will tolerate high levels of nitrate and other organic compounds. They will do even better, and their colors will brighten further, in an aquarium with low levels of organic compounds. Most mushroom coral prefer indirect light or shade so the VHO fluorescent or metal halide lighting is not required. Mushroom corals come in many different colors like blue, red, green, brown, purple and often have stripes, spots, and mottled color variations. A very easy coral to keep, the mushroom coral prefers indirect light from fluorescents and low water current. They will often propagate until they completely cover the substrate upon which they grow.

Tech Notes on Mushroom Corals: The symbiotic algae zooxanthellae hosted within the mushroom coral provides the majority of its nutritional requirements from the light driven process of photosynthesis. Mushroom corals will also benefit from regular feedings of zooplankton and small meaty items. Place the mushroom coral low in the aquarium until it opens fully, and then gradually over a few weeks, move the coral to the desired location. To open large, mushroom corals prefer low water movement within the aquarium.

Blue Florida Ricordea Mushroom
Ricordea florida

Blue ricordea is a very hardy mushroom that will adapt to a wide range of lighting conditions, The brightness and vibrance of the colors is absolutely outstanding. View under actinic lighting and the florescence of this animal will shock you! The light driven process of photosynthesis provides the majority of its nutritional requirements so feeding is not nescessary. Ricordea Mushrooms are sold per mushroom, and are attached to a small rock. If ordering multiple Ricordea Mushrooms , we may ship polyps either singly or several attached to one rock. Other Ricordea are listed by the quantities below. If ordering the (6) polyp or (12) polyp, depending on availability, we may send all mushrooms attached to one rock, or send multiple rocks with one or more mushroom attached to each rock.
Notes: Place Mushrooms along the bottom half of the aquarium on an exposed rock. Make sure that currents will be able to supply it with necessary nutrients and trace elements. Leave several inches between it and other corals.Although symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae hosted within its body supply some of its nutritional requirements through photosynthesis it does require supplemental feeding. Supplementing its diet with the addition of trace elements, marine snow, phytoplankton, brine shrimp, and food for filter feeders will help to insure its continued good health.

 Orange Florida Ricordea Mushroom
Ricordea florida
Orange Ricordea is a very hardy species of soft coral, and is very popular among reef keepers. They have a multitude of bumps covering a circular disk "polyp", with a ring of similar bumps surrounding the rim. A single polyp commonly splits into two polyps during spawning, and can do so multiple times in the aquarium! You will receive a single mushroom mounted to coral rubble. These are very hardy corals and require low to medium lighting to survive in the tank. Better lighting will result in faster growth. They can tolerate a wide range of temperature from 72F-84F.

  Blue/Green Giant Hairy Mushroom
Rhodactis indosinensis
It is very easy to maintain in the reef aquarium, and a good choice for the beginner hobbyist. It is somewhat aggressive, however, and can harm sessile invertebrates and overgrow other inhabitants of the reef. It often grows in shallow water, so it prefers a medium to high light level combined with a medium water movement within the aquarium. It reproduces by fission or laceration, and will do so in the home aquarium provided that water conditions are adequate, sometimes causing over-population. A small portion of the base or mouth will separate from the parent polyp and grow into a full sized mushroom within a few months. These mushrooms open from 5 to 7 inches across. They are a monstor size beautiful frilly Purple/Green color and terrific looking in a reef tank. Feed frequently to encourage it to grow and divide, and it prefers strong indirect light & low to medium flow for maxi expansion.
Notes: Place Mushrooms along the bottom half of the aquarium on an exposed rock. Make sure that currents will be able to supply it with necessary nutrients and trace elements.  Flourescent Green
Mushroom Rock
Rhodactis sp

This variety of mushroom coral is various shades of green. They are a wonderful invertebrate for bottom placement in a reef aquarium. Given appropriate length of time, if not pruned back, they have the ability to cover the entire tanks rockwork and sand. They are hardy and easy to maintain. In general, they need a medium light level, and should be placed lower in the tank if the light intensity is high. These mushrooms require a low to moderate indirect water flow. Too much water movement will inhibit these mushrooms to fully expand. They are semi-aggressive and require adequate space between themselves and other corals and sessile invertebrates.

St Thomas Bubble Mushroom
Discosoma sanctithomae

The Discosoma sanctithomae, most commonly known as the Bubble Mushroom or Warty Mushroom, is named for the shape of its tentacles. It is also known as the Atlantic Bubble Mushroom or Warty Corallimorph. It is a well known and favorite mushroom coral, offering a distinctive look to the reef aquarium. This is a larger mushroom, and can grow to 4" (10 cm). One of its unusual characteristics is that it will sometimes close part way, into a "purse-string" style. Their tissue is very thin however, and can tear easy.
The St Thomas Bubble Mushroom usually comes in translucent blue/green with tentacles that may contrast in color and be iridescent. Instead of having long feeder tentacles, their tentacles will form rounded vesicles or they may elongate to take on a fuzzy appearance. This mushroom is very decorative and moderate to easy to care for, but it is a more expensive mushroom coral. The St Thomas Bubble Mushroom is a good choice for T-5 or Metal Halide lit tanks, since it likes indirect intense lighting. You may have to experiment on locations for maximum size, color and reproduction. They are a bit more difficult than the Actinodiscus genus because they are not as tolerant of poor water conditions. They also cannot handle a high water flow since it will prevent them from getting nourishment. The D. sanctithomae propagates easily in captivity, which can contribute to preserving the wild populations. After splitting however, the clone mushroom doesn't necessarily always resemble the "mother" mushroom, thus giving the aquarist a variety of shades and colors. They have very few predators if any.

Green and Blue Caribbean
Bullseye Mushroom
Discosoma Neglecta
The Green and Blue Bullseye Mushroom is a beautiful species originating from the Caribbean Ocean. It is varied in different shades of green, and the surface of the disc is adorned with small vesicles that give it a bumpy appearance. These are very hardy mushrooms that will adapt to a wide range of lighting, and are typically placed low in the average reef aquarium.
It will adapt to a wide variety of lighting conditions, and care should be taken to acclimate this coral to metal halide lighting. Place the coral low in the aquarium until it opens fully, and then gradually over a few weeks, move the coral to the desired location. It prefers a low water movement within the aquarium. It is considered semi-aggressive and requires adequate space between itself and other corals. It reproduces by longitudinal fission.

 Assorted Color Mushroom Rock
Rhodactis indosinensis

The Assorted Color Mushroom Rock display a wide variety of colors, textures, and patterns. Some are solid colors, whereas, others are striped or spotted. They are hardy and a good beginner coral (easy to maintain). In the aquarium, under the right conditions, mushrooms multiply and spread. In general, they need a medium light level, and should be placed lower in the tank if the light intensity is high. The Actinodiscus Mushrooms prefer a low to medium water flow within the aquarium, although different species may have different requirements. They are semi-aggressive and require adequate space between themselves and other corals and sessile invertebrates. Each ships as several individual mushrooms attached to one rock. In general, they need a medium light level and a low to medium water flow within the aquarium, although different species may have different requirements. They are semi-aggressive and require adequate space between themselves and other corals and sessile invertebrates.

Though mushrooms come in a variety of colors and patterns, they grow in colonies on rocks and therefore there will normally be only one type of mushroom on each rock. The type, size of individual mushrooms and number of mushrooms on the rock may vary.

VERY HARDY - GREAT BEGINNER CORAL

 Purple Frilly Mushroom Rock
Rhodactis indosinensis

Frilly Purple with Green centers!!!
Purplish very "hairy" tentacles with glowing green centers! The Rhodactis Hairy Mushroom is a member of the order Corallimorpharia and occurs in many colors including brown and tan, and the more colorful green and purple. Like the name suggests, the surface of these mushrooms are covered with many hair-like tentacles, giving it a hairy appearance.
Pink Pacific Ricordea Yuma
Pacific Ricordea Yuma

Description:Ricordea Yuma is always spectacular, but some especially prized specimens have brilliant fluorescent proteins in shades of orange and red. In the case of Pink Yuma's the colors are Pink with other colors mixed, and everyone is a little different. Ricordea yuma is readily distinguished from Ricordea florida by the fact that the Ricordea Yuma has pseudotentacles on the oral cone, while Ricordea florida does not. Also, Ricordea florida often has numerous mouths and elongated irregular shapes, while Ricordea yuma is usually circular, with only one mouth.
Notes: Place Yuma Mushrooms along the bottom of the aquarium on the substrate. Make sure that currents will be low. Although symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae hosted within its body supply some of its nutritional requirements through photosynthesis it does require supplemental feeding. Supplementing its diet with the addition of trace elements, marine snow, phytoplankton, brine shrimp, and food for filter feeders will help to insure its continued good health.

VERY HARDY - GREAT BEGINNER CORAL

WE WANT YOUR CORALS TO GROW - NOT JUST STAY ALIVE
Why Phytoplankton:
Phytoplankton is very important to marine life. It is the primary producers in the ocean. Crucial to the development and survival of most, if not all marine animals . But what is phytoplankton? It is just a fancy word for tiny floating plants (such as diatoms and dinoflagellates), which serve the same role in the food chains of the oceans as grass and shrubs serve on land; namely small things eat them. Many coral reef animals feed directly on phytoplankton. Some essential nutrients provided by phytoplankton cannot be synthesized by animals, and therefore are extremely important components of a healthy diet. Note: Lighting and coloration of corals: Please note not all corals from our tanks and lighting will look the same when they are in your tanks. Everybody's tanks have different lighting setups, spectrums, combinations, etc. Aquatic Connection's tanks are light by 400 watt 20K Halide bulbs. We use these bulbs because it provides the perfect balance of natural white light along with the deeper actinic blue that corals need to bring out the correct colors and to thrive off of. If your tank consists of all daylight (10K's, 65K's etc.) with minimal actinic lighting, your not going to get as many of the vibrant true colors from your corals as you would with the correct lighting combination. If you need better descriptions of corals please feel free to contact us.
