Scallops
|
Scallops share
a two-part shell with a hinge and foot, though they have no true
head. All are filter feeders, requiring food designed for these
types of invertebrates. If they are threatened, they can escape
using water propulsion by clapping their valves together. |

Bright Red Flame
Scallop

|
The Red Flame Scallop has a bright
red mantel with red or white tentacles. It builds a small nest
of small rocks and pieces of coral in which it embeds itself.
When threatened, it can escape by clapping its valves together,
propelling it through the water. It tolerates all animals that
do not try to eat it, and can be kept in groups. It is a filter
feeder, and requires floating micro - plankton to be kept alive
in the aquarium, and requires supplementation with phytoplankton.
It also needs proper calcium levels and alkalinity. It does not
tolerate nitrates or copper-based medications. Approximate Purchase
Size: 11/2" to 2-1/2" |

Electric Flame
Scallop

The Electric Flame Scallop has a
bright red mantel with red tentacles. The mantel of this species
seems to create electricity which can be seen shooting across
the mantel like lightning bolts. These surges of electricity
are bright enough to be seen in the aquarium when the lights
are off. It builds a small nest of small rocks and pieces of
coral in which it embeds itself. When threatened, it can escape
by clapping its valves together, propelling it through the water.
It tolerates all animals that do not try to eat it, and can be
kept in groups.
Being a filter feeder, it requires frequent water changes or
a source of food being added to the water, such as live or frozen
baby brine shrimp, Marine Snow, PhytoPlancton or any other suitable
micro foods.Electric Flame Scallops also benefit from the addition
of the normal reef trace elements and the addtion of iodine,
calcium, and strontium on occasion.

Thorny Oyster

|
The Thorny Oyster is
large and colorful. The shell is shaped much like a scallop's
shell, but the Thorny Oyster remains securely attached to the
substrate on the aquarium floor, and does not wander. A reef
safe invertebrate, the shell has many ridges and spines giving
the Thorny Oyster an unusual, unique appearance. The Thorny Oyster
is very sensitive to water quality and changes in the aquariums
salinity (specific gravityu). It is a filter feeder, and requires
floating micro - plankton to be kept alive in the aquarium, and
requires supplementation with phytoplankton. It also needs proper
calcium levels and alkalinity. It does not tolerate nitrates
or copper-based medications. Approximate Purchase Size: 4"
